Logan County History Center

Promoting Logan County History through interactive and creative exhibits has been part of The Logan County History Center’s (LCHC) mission for 74 years.

On December 19, 1945 a group of people interested in history met at the Sloan Library in Zanesfield forming the foundation of what is now known as the Logan County Historical Society. The Historical Society has had a total five different homes over the years and now lives on in the Logan County History Center. The History Center is visited by hundreds of local third-graders every year and attracts over five-thousand visitors to Logan County annually.

The Historical Society’s mission is to serve as a public collector, preserver and promoter of Logan County’s rich history for the county’s citizens – past, present & future – and its visitors to better understand and appreciate the events, people and themes that have helped shape Logan County in to what is today and what it will become in the future. The Logan County Historical Society has attempted to reach this goal through its history center, programs, historical markers, Young Historians Club and other outreach services.

The major turning point for LCHC came with the passage of an operating levy in 1995. More recently, the levy passed for the sixth time in the 2019 general election. The levy provides the History Center with a large percentage of its funds for day-to-day operation and maintenance.

“The support of the people of Logan County along with the hard work of our volunteers and staff have helped make the Logan County History Center one of the premier county museums in Ohio,” said Curator, Todd McCormick. “We repeatedly hear visitors say they are surprised at how big the History Center is and the variety and quality of the exhibits,”

The Logan County History Museum includes more than a dozen rooms dedicated to a specific facet of Logan County. The LCHC also features special exhibits throughout the year including a Christmas Open House, which has Christmas Trees lining the museum hallways and the Orr Mansion is decorated in festive Christmas décor.

After being remodeled, the William Orr Residence was opened to the public in 1989. It was built in the early part of the 20th century the home cost $40,000. This was a huge sum of money for the average factory worker who only made $2 a day during that time. To show the amount of inflation, replacing the roof alone cost the Logan County Historical Society $90,000 in 1995.

The newest addition to the Logan County History Center is the Transportation Museum. Designed by Karen Beasley of Beasley Architecture and Design, the Transportation Museum opened in 2014. Its unique circular design was inspired by the spirit of the Big Four/New York Central Roundhouse railroad that stood in Bellefontaine from the late 1890s to the 1960s.

The $3 million Transportation Museum was made possible through a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation and donations from local businesses and individuals (a complete list of donors can be seen in the entry of the Transportation Museum).

The value the Logan County History Center has to our community is priceless. Please join us in congratulating them on being awarded the Business of the Month award for the month of December.
