Indian Lake Tornado
Trusted Contractors

After the devastation caused by any natural disaster, including the recent EF3 tornado in Logan County, rebuilding and repairing homes and businesses become urgent priorities.

Unfortunately, amidst the chaos, unscrupulous individuals may try to take advantage of the situation by perpetrating contractor scams. These scams can compound the challenges already faced by affected individuals and communities.

The Logan County Chamber is one of several local resources as you search for trustworthy service providers to repair your home or business.

Tips for Hiring a Trustworthy Contractor

Research and Verify Credentials:
  - Look for contractors who are licensed, bonded, and insured. You can use the Chamber’s membership directory for local, reputable service providers. The Logan County Building Authority website also provides a list of contractors registered in Logan County.
  - Check online reviews and ratings. Try searching the business name along with the word “scam” or “review.”
  - Request references from the contractor, whether it’s a trade association, Chamber of Commerce, or previous client.

Get Multiple Quotes:
  - Obtain estimates from 2-3 different contractors to compare pricing and processes. If there is a significant difference in price, don’t just go for the lowest bid; ask for an explanation if there’s a substantial difference in price.

Secure a Written Contract:
  - Ensure that all details of the project, including costs, timelines, and materials, are documented in a written contract. The contactor should also include your contractor’s name, address, phone number, and license number (if required).
  - Read the contract carefully before signing and clarify anything unclear or contradictory.

Avoid Upfront Payments:
  - Be cautious of contractors who demand large upfront payments or ask for cash transactions.
  - Do not sign your insurance check over to any contractor. Instead, arrange for a Certificate of Completion with your bank or credit union, or ask for an invoice that can be paid by credit card, as this will often provide fraud protection.

Document Everything:
  - Keep thorough records of all communication, contracts, payments, and receipts related to the project. These documents can serve as evidence in case of disputes or disagreements.
