The response from members has been overwhelmingly positive. “Seeing and hearing the joy our members get when they walk in and notice the improvements is one of our greatest joys,” shared the leadership team. “The experience starts with our people, and we have the greatest crew in Logan County. They know this is more than a job - it’s service to the community.”

This renewed community focus is being led by newly promoted Executive Director Matt Evans. “Serving the kids has been a great joy, and I’m excited about helping the Y continue its shift from just a membership organization to a true community,” says Evans. “Growing up here has given me years of perspective. I’ve seen and heard so much that I can now bring to the Y to better serve our neighbors. I’m really looking forward to working with teams across Central Ohio to keep making the Y a place where everyone belongs.”

With this leadership and renewed vision, the YMCA continues to expand its impact and strengthen its role as a community hub.

Looking ahead, the YMCA is preparing for Healthy Kids Day, an exciting community event coming up this April. This family-focused event promotes healthy lifestyles for children and offers local businesses an opportunity to engage with families across the community.

One way businesses can participate is by donating an item for the Healthy Kids Day silent auction. Companies may contribute an item that represents their brand or purchase a unique item to donate. All donations will be prominently displayed and acknowledged during the event.

​After graduating from West Liberty-Salem, Dave pursued formal training at Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis. His hard work and dedication earned him an internship at VOSS Village Olds/Cadillac/BMW in Centerville. Following graduation with honors, Dave was recruited into the prestigious BMW STEP Program, attending Ohio Technical College in Cleveland and becoming a BMW Certified Diagnostic Technician.

That certification led him to Dreyer & Reinbold BMW in Indianapolis (the oldest BMW dealership in North America) where he spent nearly ten years honing his skills alongside some of the best technicians in the industry. Even with a successful career in a high-level dealership environment, Dave never let go of the dream of returning home and opening his own shop.

That dream became reality in 2012, when Dave and Katie moved back to West Liberty and opened Solomon’s Garage in a rented section of an old machinery shed on Dave’s family farm. Those early days were challenging, but Dave always found a way to persevere. Despite the obstacles, business grew steadily, fueled by hard work, determination, and strong community support.

After four years, the opportunity arose to purchase the former Firestone tire shop at 122 S. Detroit Street. With help from The People’s Savings & Loan Co., Solomon’s Garage moved off the family farm and into downtown West Liberty. Over the past decade, the business has continued to reinvest, remodel, and expand, growing into an eight-bay, 6,600-square-foot facility that now anchors a thriving section of downtown.

Along the way, Dave and Katie have been supported and encouraged by family, friends, neighboring business owners, the Ohio Small Business Development Center, and industry coaching organizations. One lesson has remained constant throughout their journey: in business, you must always be learning, growing, and challenging yourself to reach the next level.

Today, Solomon’s Garage is best known for its expertise in modern automotive electrical systems and European vehicles, but the team proudly provides complete diagnostic, repair, and maintenance services for all domestic, Asian, and European cars and light trucks. Their focus on preventative maintenance helps customers avoid unexpected breakdowns and make informed decisions about their vehicles – whether the goal is to get another year out of a car or drive it well beyond 200,000 miles.

Their commitment to integrity and service has earned Solomon’s Garage numerous recognitions over the years, including the 2019 Drive Effective Shop Manager Award presented at Drive Expo West in Los Angeles, the Logan County Chamber’s 2018 Integrity in Business Award, West Liberty’s 2022 Business of the Year, and the Volunteer of the Year Award from Lutheran Community Services in 2025.

Marmon Valley Farm’s story begins with “Uncle” Bill and “Aunt” Phyllis Wiley, who shared a passion for faith-filled outdoor adventure. After working at Kirkmont and being inspired by the Smithers family of Rollicking Hills Farm Camp in DeGraff, the Wileys purchased a 75-acre farm that was for sale – and the rest is history.

The land itself holds an even deeper story. Long before the farm camp opened, the area was home to Wyandot and Shawnee tribes, including Chief Tarhe’s Wyandot village, which once stood where Zanesfield is today. Legendary frontiersman Simon Kenton also made his home in the valley. The Wileys chose the name Marmon Valley Farm in honor of the Marmon brothers, first settlers in 1805, two of whose homes remain on the property today. If you haven’t heard the story straight from Wrangler Matt himself, you’re going to want to put that on your Marmon Valley bucket list.

From its humble beginnings, the camp has expanded to encompass 650 acres, now spread across what were once three neighboring farms. The Louden farm, first purchased in 1964, became the stable area and center of camp life. Over time, the Wileys added the Thompson farm in 1970, creating more riding trails, sleeping quarters, and a dining hall.

Today, visitors can enjoy trail rides, pony rides, hayrides, a petting zoo, riding lessons, birthday parties, field trips, retreats, and seasonal events throughout the year. From mother-daughter weekends to church group retreats and scout outings, Marmon Valley offers countless opportunities to unplug, connect, and make lifelong memories.

Coming up this season, Marmon Valley Farm is excited to host two standout community events that perfectly capture its spirit of faith, fun, and family. The legacy of Bill and Phyllis Wiley continues under the faithful leadership of the Wiley family. Wrangler Matt Wiley serves as Director, while his wife Kathy leads the lesson program. Matt’s sister, Jane Olsen directs the Riding Stable alongside her husband Steve, who oversees operations. They are supported by a dedicated team that includes Rob Workman, Program Director; Gene Williams, Guest Groups Coordinator; Cheri Wiseman, Office Manager; and Darlene Boyer, Food Service Manager. In addition, approximately 40 committed staff members contribute their time and skills on weekends and in hourly roles, assisting with office work, trail guides, maintenance, kitchen service, and the gift shop. Together, this team proudly carries on Marmon Valley Farm’s long-standing tradition of faith, hospitality, and community.

​AGC’s history in Logan County dates back to 1985 when 92+ acres was purchased in Bellefontaine, Ohio and AP Technoglass was incorporated. The incorporation was a joint venture between Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. and PPG Industries.

On September 18, 1985, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Bellefontaine site. Over the next year, the plant was constructed, equipment installed, and 150 associates were hired. With more than 40 employees, many have been with the company for over 15 years, including the Service Manager and Fixed Operations Manager – who have each dedicated three decades to helping boaters enjoy the lake life.

Most people think the boating business shuts down in winter, but that is not the case! “The truth is, there’s no down season anymore in the marine business” says Monica Hurst, General Manager (and Bill’s granddaughter).

In the off-season, staff switch gears – literally. Sales teams help with winterization, the service department pitches in on boat show prep, and every season becomes a team-wide effort. “We have a hat rack – and we all just switch hats depending on the season,” Monica jokes.

Monica’s advice to those just starting out? “Persevere. Blood, sweat, and tears are part of the equation to success.” It's a message only someone who’s weathered storms, literal and figurative, can deliver with such authenticity.

After navigating challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, aquatic vegetation issues, and even a tornado, the team is focused on celebrating their incredible 75th anniversary. It’s a milestone that underscores not just their longevity, but their resilience. After all these years, the Spend-A-Day team is most of all grateful to be able to still do what they love – serving their boating family and their amazing community.
